The Grief and Loss of Dolly
I've cried through several therapy sessions this week along side of some gentle souls grieving the loss of our beloved Dolly Parton.
If the loss of Dolly Parton hit you harder than you expected, that grief is real.
Sometimes we grieve people we never personally knew. A singer. An actor. An author. Someone whose voice, humor, kindness, or presence became woven into different seasons of our lives.
Maybe her music reminds you of your mother or grandmother.
Maybe she takes you back to a time of safety, love, or belonging.
Or maybe she touches something more complicated — a deep longing for the kind of warmth, acceptance, family, or home you wish you had known or that you deeply miss.
Sometimes the people we admire come to represent more than themselves. Dolly was one of those rare souls whose kindness, humor, generosity, strength, and unmistakable light reached far beyond her music. She touched people across cultures, generations and across the world in deeply personal ways. She connected us to memories, hopes, comfort, safety, identity, and again the parts of us that still ache for something we miss. Her life was uniquely her own, but the warmth she gave somehow became part of all of ours.
We may be grieving a time in our lives. A relationship. A version of ourselves. A feeling of home. Or the realization that another familiar piece of our world has changed.
Even if you didn't know her personally, she formed a thread that connects to us all deeply through music which runs deeper than words, and yes her authentic lyrics, stories, core values of unconditional love, foundations and charities for a better world and the good that is deep within you.
And that is enough to leave a very real empty space.
RIP dear, dear Dolly.
